Gratitude

by Charmaine Hunte

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy

Life is like a present.  It’s a gift not a right.  Often we take that fact for granted by assuming we will have another day.  Gratitude is a powerful emotion because it embraces the attitude of enjoying what we have right now.  Often there is so much we put off until tomorrow and the sad thing is that tomorrow never comes – all we have is today.  In Steven Covey’s book 7 Habits of Highly Effective people Habit 2 is Begin with the end in mind.  He gives an exercise where you have to visualize the details of your funeral.  Who would be there, what would they say, what memories of you would they share?  It is a powerful exercise because it forces you to make decisions and gives you control to make changes.  Now is the time to be doing the activities that are most important to you and spending time with the people who matter the most.  You have the opportunity to make the memories that you want to leave behind, seize the moment!

The magic of gratitude is that when you focus your thoughts on what you are grateful for you create more opportunities to be grateful and happy about.
